Dating is fun, right? So, why not take yourself on an adventure that mirrors one of your favorite dating experiences? This is great for beginners!

Artist dates, by nature, revolve around the idea of spending creative time on your own. This time is meant to be enjoyed by yourself, in a way that will keep you connected with your creative self. While some artists have no trouble coming up with ways to do this, it is a challenge for many to think beyond their art projects.

For this art adventure, you are going to plan a date that mirrors one of your favorite dating experiences. Because a date is typically shared with another person, some creative thinking (and courage) is going to be needed for some of these adventures.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Go to the movies, and then take yourself to your favorite restaurant.
  • Take a picnic lunch to a park, and read poetry under a tree.
  • Find a walking trail, and photograph what is around you.
  • Play mini-golf and then take yourself out for ice cream. (Yes, you can play by yourself despite how many odd looks you may get.)
  • Drive through the countryside, stop at an antique shop, and then have lunch at some tucked away café.

These are just some of the ways you can embrace your favorite dating experience. Now, how can these experiences be turned into artistic adventures? Remember, the idea is to think outside the box and muster up some courage!

Here are some ideas:

  • While you’re at the movies and the restaurant, save all the ephemera you can get your hands on (including the wrappers from the giant candy bars eaten during the movie).
  • During your picnic at the park, collect items from nature and bookmark all the poetry you read to incorporate into a future art piece or art journal.
  • The hiking trail will provide many opportunities beyond the photographs taken. Bring along a sketchpad and some charcoals (or soft pencils) to sketch what you see, collect tree (or rock) rubbings, and press plants.
  • Mini-golf and ice cream are more opportunities to collect all the ephemera you can get your hands on (including the score card you’re using to play against yourself!).
  • When driving through the countryside, stop at information centers and collect ephemera. Don’t forget to pack your camera, and collect ephemera from the antique shops and café as well!

When preparing for these artist date adventures, it is important to remember to pack essential items for your trip. You will want art supplies (sketchbooks, art journals, color pencils, crayons, charcoals, etc.), a light snack if the date does not involve eating out, Baggies if the date involves collecting things from nature, and your camera. Keep all of these items in a backpack or canvas bag that is comfortable enough to carry around with you throughout the entire artist date.

As you can see, there are multiple choices for each adventure. Consider setting up an artist date for each of the suggestions listed above, even if it does not mirror your favorite dating experience. The idea is to create as many adventures as possible, in order to open up the doors for more artistic opportunities.
