What kind of artist date would we have if artists couldn't embrace the Halloween season in one way or another? This includes Harvest Festivals, as well!

This spooky time of year is so much fun for both children and adults alike. There's a lot of opportunity to take yourself of many types of artists dates during the Halloween and Harvest Festival season. This idea focuses on use of the following items:

  • art journal
  • colored pencils or charcoals
  • sketch pencils
  • pencil sharpener
  • gum erasers
  • camera (disposable, digital or whatever else you want to use)
  • glue sticks
  • white glue
  • baggies
  • envelopes
  • gel pens or sharpies
  • bottled water
  • snackNow, take yourself on an adventure! Find a cornfield, an apple orchard, a farm or a park where there's autumn-ness sparkling all around you. Choose an area that speaks to you, speaks to how you love to embrace the Halloween and Harvest Festival season and inspires you to create. You may also want to choose a bird sanctuary, a nature trail or a campsite. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring something soft to sit on.Find a comfortable place to sit and soak in your surroundings. This could be on a bale of hay, under an apple tree, or in the middle of a pile of raked leaves. You get the idea! Take out your art journal and write a few lines about what you see. Is there a scarecrow? Do you see a line of Jack-o'lanterns? Are there other interesting decorations worth noting? Then, start sketching with the colored pencils or charcoals.Once you've absorbed your surroundings through writing and sketching, take the adventure a step further. Walk around the area and photograph every element of interest. It could be the moss formation at the base of a tree, the clouds on the horizon, the colors of the leaves or any other element that you feel drawn to. Use your art journal to capture rubbings of interesting textures and make notes about where they were found. Use the baggies and envelopes to collect items to glue to the pages or use for future art projects.Return to your spot and reflect on the adventure you just took while enjoying your snack and some water. Add more to your art journal pages as you glue in collected items, write more text and create more drawings.Other ideas include finding flowers to press between the pages of your art journal, writing poetry on the pages facing your sketches, and pressing interesting leaves between the pages of your art journal. If desired, paints and brushes can also be brought on this excursion, along with some small pieces of canvas or a wet-media art journal. There are numerousf ways to twist these ideas into your own, so don't be afraid to let your imagination run wild!
