Artist Date Idea #1

Let's create a kit!

In keeping with a lot of your goals to go on Artist Dates through use of Julia Cameron's book, The Artist's Way, I'll be presenting Artist Date Ideas frequently.

Week of October 22nd to October 28th:[choose a day that works best for you or, if you're reading this at a later date, include this in next week's schedule]

Assignment:

Take a trip to a used bookstore, thrift store or salvage store and pick up a book you have absolutely no interest in reading. The book should have a hard cover and have at least 250 pages or more. Hunt around the store for interesting cards, ribbons, buttons, stickers, recipe cards, magazines and keep your receipt after you make your purchases.

Next, visit your town hall, information center or chamber of commerce. Pick up as many brochures as you can carry. My town hall has about thirty different ones, many of which open up into maps. If there's calendars and business cards, don't forget to grab those as well.

When you return home, find a small box (a shoe box works best - if you don't have one, add a stop to the store to pick up a small container to your list of trips to make on this date). Once you have your box or container, place all your items collected inside.

What do you have? And altered book creativity kit. Add things you have around your house:

  • glue sticks
  • newspaper clippings
  • junk mail with interesting pictures
  • small paper bags
  • envelopes (you can make these out of your brochures, too)
  • pens/pencils
  • colored pencils
  • notebook paper
  • markers
  • paper cutter
  • We'll talk about what to do with this kit on a future Artist Date Idea.
