Paint Color Chip Craft Art Project

Mixed-Media Artist's Date Project Experiments With Winter Themes

© Jennifer Hollowell

Take yourself on an artist's date to your local home improvement store and gather a selection of paint color chip samples. We're going to make some mixed media art!

In the past, articles have already been posted to this Mixed Media Art topic about paint chip samples and artist's dates. It is worth revisiting because there are a number of wonderful and creative projects that can be created with these paint chip samples. For those of you who are still experiencing the winter blues, this will be a good opportunity to get out of the house, and then create some themed mixed media art.

Here are some ideas to try:

  1. Adding punches of color and texture to collages using paint chip samples.
  2. Using paint chip samples as miniature mats in structured page spreads.
  3. Creation of pockets and mini-hiding spots in book art projects using paint chip samples.
  4. Cut lettering from stencils tracings on to paint chip samples.

This two step process will require some planning ahead, both for the trip to the home improvement store, as well as the time needed for creation of the art piece. If needed, take two days to work on this project. Not only will this keep the creative juices flowing for more than one day, it will allow for the edging out of any kind of artist’s block that might be looming on the horizon.

Consider working with another artist as well. Sometimes the act of collecting art materials and them transforming them into a piece of mixed media art with another artist is more successful. Why? Because you are there to encourage each other, inspire each other, and learn new techniques from each other. They may have some paint chip ideas you never thought to try before, or vice versa.
