Build Up Your Collection of Mixed Media Art Supplies For Free

Time and time again, mixed media artists are in the flurry of creation only to discover they don't have what they need. Make some templates to help build up your supplies

While in the midst of creation, there are many times when mixed media artists come up with great ideas and want to implement them on the spot. The problem is, they do not have what they need on hand. This is a problem and can cause a block because the creative juices are already flowing.

To solve this problem, try thinking about what to stock studios with. This how-to is going to cover creating templates with rounded corners. These templates come in handy when altering tins, creating ATCs (or ACEOS), cutting niches, making postcards, creating bordered sections on a page, and so on. So, as you can see, the need for them is there.

  • Step one: gather several cereal boxes, or boxes with cardboard similar to a cereal box.
  • Step two: you will need scissors, a pencil, a ruler, and coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters).
  • Step three: create rectangles, squares, and triangles in several different sizes on the cardboard using the ruler and pencil, and then cut them out.
  • Step four: find coins that will fit into the corners of the templates, place them on the edge so they are lined up completely, and trace the rounded edge.
  • Step five: once all the coins have been traced, cut the rounded corners for each template.

It is as easy as that. Now you have several different sized templates with rounded corners. These corners add interest to the projects, but do not neglect the typical straight edged corners. Create some standard square, rectangle, and triangle templates. This will allow for variety in projects and build up the supply bin a bit more.

While the cardboard is out, consider taking out a compass and creating circle templates as well. Place two circles next to each other to create an oval or, if the circles are different sizes, an egg shape will be created. The addition of circles and other “round” objects in mixed-media projects are just as important as squares, rectangles, and triangles.

There are additional geometric shapes that can be implemented as well depending on how complex you would like to be with your projects. There are a lot of patterns available online, so the opportunity to print, trace, and cut are there. Let your imagination take over when creating these templates and you’ll be very surprised at what you come up with. You’ll also be surprised at how many new twists and turns your work will take once you have these templates on hand.
