This Spring delivers a showcase of artists and important shows that are giving an energized lift to the new art city, Denver, Colorado.

The Object Project began as an idea which resulted in an original body of work created among 15 contemporary still life artists, one being Coloradoan Scott Fraser (Longmont, CO). This is probably the most unusual art exhibit one can see in Denver this spring because it was concocted by artists rather than a curator.

The paintings are unified by including the same five objects with no other rules binding the paintings. In the spirit of democracy, artists voted on which objects should be used and settled on a bone, a mirror, a clear glass of water, a moth, a ball of string. Duplicates of these objects were then mailed around the country to the participants who each then developed two paintings using them. The paintings from this project have been touring the country and are now coming to the Museum of Outdoor Arts in Englewood, CO! The reception is Febrary 21st preceded by a panel discussion featuring the Object Project artists at 4:30 pm.

Logan Lecture Artists

Continuing this spring is the popular Logan Lecture series bringing six poignant contemporary artists to the city with help of the Modern and Contemporary Art Department of the Denver Art Museum (DAM) and the members of the DAM Contemporaries. These artist lectures allow exciting artists to present their work and have question and answer scenarios with the public.

After the lectures, the artist and crowd stream over to the Mad Wine Bar, just across from the Denver Art Museum's Hamilton Building. This creates a casual social setting where the artist is available for friendly conversation. On the bill for the upcoming lectures this spring and early summer are Rachel Lachowicz (Feb. 18), Fred WIlson (March 18), Wes Hempel (April 15), Sandy Skoglund (May 20) and Beverly Semmes (June 17). Doors open at 6 pm and lectures start promptly at 7:00pm. See the link above for prices and specific information.

Of the fantastic artists on their way to Denver to graciously share their time and energy with art lovers, Rachel Lachowicz, Wes Hempel and Sandy Skoglund are extraordinarily interesting. Rachel Lachowicz creates sculptures using lipstick. Her sculptures are in the shape of objects associated with masculinity; neckties, urinals and the like, creating a confusion in sexual identity of the lipstick objects.

Wes Hempel is a Boulder, CO resident who paints in an old master style with the colors of the Renaissance painters of Italy. His narratives are a cross-examination of the meaning of homosexual identity and the awkard situations created when gay men experience expectations generally placed upon heterosexual males in our society. Sandy Skoglund is well known especially for her installations of monochromatic domestic scenes that are overrun with sculptured animals of another color. Her piece titled Fox Games is now on display at the DAM and is a visual treat!
