Can collage art and paint mix?

© Jennifer Hollowell

Let’s talk about how artists mix these forms of wet and dry media successfully. Do you think it’s impossible?

When I first started experimenting with collage art, I worked with dry media and the only thing wet I introduced was the adhesive. While I really enjoyed this work, I felt it was missing "something" and could use more depth.

That's where layering came in. I searched around for artists successfully using this wet and dry media layering technique and quickly formulated a list of frequent stops:

  • Somavenus.com: I've been following this collage artist for about two years for several reasons. Not only is she creating fabulous works of art, she's providing me with constant inspiration. Her site is filled with works she's selling, as well as links to other sites around the 'net she frequents. Certainly worth the visit and will remain at the top of my list or recommendations.
  • Erin Partridge: I've been following Erin since 2003. We crossed paths at a popular collaborative site called nervousness and, later, several others. Emotion-filled pieces flood this artist's studio on canvas, in her art journal and even on her walls. Marked in my "must see" recommendations as a real artist; keep an eye on her because she is going places. Please visit here for more of her work and other information.
  • Crissy Kight: I found this artist January of 2006 when I learned of the Embodiment Project. Her work also evokes the kind of emotion that is both moving and inspirational more levels than one. Photography are also on her list of accolades, all of which can be found on her site and numerous other sites.
  • These are just a few of the artists I admire that are truly getting it done. They're successfully creating layered collage art using both wet and dry media. They're successfully selling art, inspiring others and nurturing their craft. If that isn't motivating, I don't know what is. You're welcome to share your list of artists to admire and be inspired by in the discussion area.
