If you're living in a colder climate, cabin fever is nothing new. Here are some ideas about how to get out of the house, and have some artists dates to break cabin fever

This winter seems to be lasting forever in the northeast, but residents seem to say that every year. Rather than complain about the six feet of snow piling up outside, why not embrace the season with some artist's dates? Cabin fever can creep up easily, particularly for those who are not interested in winter sports or cold weather. Artists dates can break that up a bit.

Here are some ideas:

  • Take pictures (either with a digital camera or a regular camera) from each window of your home. Develop them (or print them out), gather some art supplies, grab your art journal, and head to a coffee shop or your library. Create some pages in your art journal using the photographs.
  • Go for a ride with your camera and take pictures of trees covered with snow. Bring along some charcoals and paper. If you don’t mind trudging through some snow, get some bark rubbings and twig rubbings from some of the trees you’ve photographed. You can either save these items for a future artist's date or work with them when you return home.
  • Find a coffee shop or bookstore with tables that face an outside window. Bring along your art journal or a sketchbook. Draw what you see outside the window. Bring along some additional art supplies (like markers, gel pens, colored pencils) and create colorful work. If you have room in your bag, bring along some embellishments and layer the work. Collect some items from where you’re sitting (a menu, event calendar, or brochures) to either work with while you’re there, or to work with another time.
  • Build a snowman! Use unusual items from your home to decorate him, and then turn him into a model. Take all kinds of pictures of your snowman, and then either develop them or print them out. Use the pictures in art projects like collage, art journal pages, altered book pages, and working on mixed media paintings on canvas. You could also create book covers, greeting cards, and invitations using your snowman pictures!

With ideas like these, you should be able to break free from cabin fever and get some artists dates accomplished. These ideas, of course, will hopefully spawn some additional ideas to get you over the winter hump and into spring. When spring hits, it is going to be a flurry of artists date activities! There will be so much to do you won’t know which date to choose first!
