I am a member of an art group called ArtSoMoFo, which gathers online once per year during the month of October. The idea is to create on piece of art (or at least work on one piece of art) everyday during the month of October. I have touched on this subject briefly last year and the year before.
Last year, I challenged myself to create a 4x4 inch piece of mixed media art per day and, if I had time, I would work in my art journal or on a large-scale painting. I pre-cut all my 4x4’s, gathered a shoe box full of supplies to work on them with, and made notes about some possible themes.
I will be honest, this challenge was more difficult than I thought. For me, smaller pieces look odd without a lot of detail. And, as any artist knows, a lot of detail takes time. During that month, I finished four 4x4’s. Yes, that is all! I finished one large-scale painting, started an altered book, and finished four ATC’s also, but that is beside the point.
Do you have trouble working on a smaller piece of mixed media art? What is your experience working with smaller pieces in comparison to larger pieces of mixed media art? Do you find yourself working on smaller pieces because it provides you with more instant gratification? I am interested in hearing your views, so if you explore these questions in your blogs please feel free to send me the link or post it to a discussion thread.
