Are You Afraid to Make a Mess?

Mixed Media Messes

Having fun with mixed media art projects involves making a mess more often than not. Does this bother you or do you just go with the flow?

I admit I am an obsessive-compulsive neat freak. I love creating art projects, but I just cannot seem to let things be. Whenever I create something, I find myself spending just as much of my free time cleaning as I do working on the piece of art. It frustrates me, mostly because I really do not have a lot of time to work on these projects. There was a time, long long ago, when I could get up in the middle of a project and leave everything where it was.

Those days are so far long gone that I cannot remember who that person was!

Are you the type of mixed media artist who is afraid of making a mess? Do you find yourself shying away from experimentation, or getting into an involved project because there would be a lot of clean up involved? Do you stop working on a piece early so you have enough time to make the space all neat and clean again?

I was once told that a real artist is not a neat person. I was also told that the mark of a master artist is a mess. This has always bothered me because I have never (never, ever, ever) fit into that mold. We are talking square peg, round hole here. What are your thoughts on phrases and beliefs such as these?
