Create simple designs that are high impact.

Who says are journals have to be heavily worked and manipulated over and over in order for them to look good or speak the message you're trying to convey?

They don't.

This week's art journal prompt is all about simplicity. Here's what you do:

  1. find a blank page spread in your art journal
  2. get a black ball point pen
  3. get out your colored pencils
  4. find a rectangle you can use as a template (smaller than each page in your spread) or use a ruler
  5. find small images in a magazine (they can be a theme or just what's interesting you at the tiime) and cut them out
  6. a glue stick will work best for this project

Now, it's time to create:

  • on each side of your spread, center a rectangle and draw it with bold black lines
  • inside the rectangles, use your black pen to create swirl patterns. Keep them simple and concentrate only on one portion of the rectangle. The portion you choose is up to you. Keep at least one open space in each rectangle.
  • using the colored pencils, make dots and blothes around the swirly pattern you've created.
  • on top of the swirly pattern, use the glue stick to affix the small images you found in the magazine.
  • pick your black pen up and write a word that's inspiring you at the moment using interesting handwriting. Write your word in the blank spaces you left when creating your swirly pattern.

You're done! It's a simple design, but it delivers a lot of impact. Click here to see how mine came out. Once you've finished your pages, consider posting links to the pictures in the discussion area of this blog or in blogs of your own!
