And Other Art Talk

There’s been a lot of conversations happening about what kinds of mediums to use in mixed media arts. So, let’s chat about that a bit.

Week one is over for ArtSoMoFo, for those who have been following along. For those who haven't, it's an art a day challenge where participants are to create art (not necessarily finish) on a daily basis. This is an excellent challenge for those who are interested in daily art making becoming a habit.

When it comes to daily art making, a lot of conversations have been happening about what mediums and materials to use for their mixed media creations. The beauty of mixed media is that artists can use whatever inspires them. This is where outsider art and found art creation moves to the forefront, but that's not the focus of this blog today.

Rather, let's look at five suggestions for those artists who might be stuck in a rut. This might be common knowledge to those who have been creating for years, but remember everything is new to someone somewhere. Consider using:

  • texture rubbings: reproduce these on a photocopier to use over and over again
  • aluminum foil: backgrounds, bases, frames, accents, assemblage and collage work
  • crayon shavings: these work well with assemblage and collage. They're also great for embellishing mats and picture frames.
  • wrappers: candy, gum, or anything else that's "wrapped" works well in assemblage and collage
  • photocopied letters: everyone has letters lying around, but never know what to do with them. Rather than running the risk of using the originals and not like the result, reproduce them on multi-purpose paper and incorporate them into your art.
  • This is just a sampling of what can be used for mediums in mixed media art. In the discussion area, feel free to share what your favorite medium is in your mixed media creations. It can be a common medium or an uncommon medium; it doesn't matter so long as thoughts are exchanged.
