My Artist Date

Following My Own Ideas

Artist dates were once part of my regular weekly routine. Because they played such an important role in my life, I’ve decided to bring them back.

Last Friday, when shopping for birthday gifts for the little girl across the street, I took myself on a bit of an artist date. I went into the bookstore near where I was purchasing the gifts, and headed for the magazine section. There, I found some great magazines to use for work.

Then, it occurred to me, this is not an artist date if I am focusing on gathering work-related materials. So, I headed to the art book section. There was a book I have been wanting for several months now, so I decided to see if they had a copy. No luck there. Rather than giving up, I ordered a copy.

It did not stop there, though. I planted myself in the art book section and flipped through other books that looked interesting. I was not really hunting for ideas, but rather soaking in the moment. If I had coffee, it would have been perfect. Next time, I will make sure that happens.

I walked away from this experience accomplishing goals (buying birthday gifts, buying magazines needed for work, and ordering a book I have wanted for awhile), and taking some much needed creative time for myself. Next time, I am going to plan it out better so I can spend the entire time on a date for myself.
