Tag Sale Treasures

Are You Ready to Go on a Hunt?

Now that the warm weather is here, yard sales, tag sales, and garage sales are popping up everyone on the weekends. It’s time to treasure hunt!

Finding unique items to alter, to use in mixed media art projects, or to teach my children about art projects are found in troves when I hunt through tag sales. I am constantly amazed at what people have and they do not realize. Or, on the other hand, they know what they have and are no longer interested in using. I often find:

  • Ephemera (for altered books, greeting cards, altered objects, and art journal work)
  • Objects to alter: cutting boards, damaged framed art, serving trays, etc.
  • Books to alter or take pages from for various projects (this is a given)
  • Magazines to cut up
  • Old greeting cards
  • Game pieces
  • Buttons and charms
  • Unique pieces of fabric or old curtains

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are days when I find so much that I have to walk away with only a few items, otherwise I would run out of room in my studio! I look at these sales as an opportunity to gather new materials, new ideas, and new opportunities to teach my children.

Do you treasure hunt for artistic opportunities at these kinds of sales?
